DEPOT '25

Hannah Payne Art presents Hester Finch and Deborah K Lerner

25 - 28 September

DEPOT Returns to Oxford: 25–28 September 2025

Hannah Payne Art is pleased to present Hester Finch and Deborah K Lerner at DEPOT in September

ARTISTS:

Hester Finch (b. 1981, London) lives and works in London and holds an MA Painting from the Royal College of Art (2024, recipient of the The Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Scholarship); she gained her BA Fine Art from The Ruskin, Oxford University (2002). She was shortlisted for the Ingram Prize 2024 and was shown as part of a 2-person presentation by the Ingram Collection at the London Art Fair 2025.

Finch’s paintings focus on themes of identity, power, sex, motherhood, bodies, the scatological and viscera – often through the frame of the ubiquitous screen. Her starting points are eclectic including: the life model, pornography, objects collected by her children, cyberpunk films of the 80 & 90s, etc – and can be from life, online imagery, her imagination and memory.

DEBORAH K LERNER

Deborah Lerner (b. 1989) graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 2023 and participated in the inaugural Apollo Painting School in 2024. Recent group exhibitions include ‘One Thing Touches Another’, Maya Frodeman, Wyoming, 2025, ‘Apollo Painting School Cohort 1’, Alice Amati, London, 2025, ‘Small is Beautiful’, Flowers, London, 2024, and ‘Drawing Biennial’, Drawing Room, London, 2024. For the past 2 years she has been

conducting research into the artist Prunella Clough which has led to several curatorial opportunities including a duo show at Flexitron earlier this year and some Prunella related projects in the pipeline for 2026.

Lerner’s work considers the material properties of paint, the history of the medium and how it can be used to explore the universal condition. Influenced by authors such as Maggie Nelson, Katherine Angel, Deborah Levy and Amia Srinivasan, the paintings make visible the values which underpin their writing such as slowness, nuance, quietness and care. Daily observations become drawings and in time, the structural start of a painting.
