"I love colours. I really enjoy observing them in nature in great detail: the transitions, the contrasts, the textures. In Los Angeles, it was the sunsets and the ocean. Here, it is the greens I see when I walk my dog, the moss, the flowers in the beautiful spring."
To coincide with Chromatic Solace, Carmen Mardonez current solo exhibition presented by Hannah Payne Art at TM Gallery, I spoke with Carmen about her practice, process and evolving approach to textile-based work.
In this Artist Spotlight interview for TM Lighting, Carmen reflects on her intuitive, freehand embroidery technique and her use of reclaimed domestic fabrics as both material and meaning. The conversation touches on the role of colour, memory and lived experience within her work, shaped by time spent in Santiago, Los Angeles and now the UK.
Offering a closer insight into the thinking behind the exhibition, the interview traces a practice that continues to expand in scale, ambition and material sensitivity.
